Terms that you might want to know:
The World Wide Web, also called the WWW, is a giant network inside the Internet. Sites making up the World Wide Web can contain graphics, sounds, and other forms of multimedia. Different sites in the World Wide Web can also be linked to each other by using hyperlinks. With its interconnectivity and multimedia, the World Wide Web shows enormous potential.
A Web Site (also called a homepage) is a site on the World Wide Web. It can contain graphics, pictures of the owner, files that can be downloaded, and anything else the owner might be inclined to include.
A URL is the "address" of a Home Page. By typing the URL of a page into their browser, a person can go to the Home Page that that particular URL points to. A URL generally has three parts:
The prefix (usually "http://")
The domain name (usually "www.something.com")
Any extra text defining the location on the server (usually "www.something.com/location")
Together, these parts make up the URL (http://www.something.com)
When we finish your Web Site, we will notify you of the URL.
A browser is a program that lets a person view web sites(such as those created by PenguinNet). A browser must be able to view all the current HTML, plus any new and exciting additions to the HTML language. Two popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Netscape Navigator.
A server holds all Home Page information, including the pages themselves and the graphics that go to the page. When a browser tries to access a Web Site, the server "hands" the correct information to the browser. The browser then displays the information to the user in a readable format.
HTML stands for "HyperText Markup Language". It is a programming language that is used to program web pages. Using HTML, a person can include text, graphics, sounds, and many other interesting features.
Upload means to send a file from one computer to another remote computer. An example of this is when someone creates a web site. That person must then upload the web site to a server for it to be viewed on the Internet. PenguinNet will upload your final site to the server, free of charge.
Download means to receive a file from a remote computer. An example of this is when a person encounters a program on the Internet. That person can download the program onto his/her computer to be run.
Frames are when a page is divided into two or more sections that can be scrolled independently of each other. Frames are most often used to aid in navigation around a web site. They usually consist of some quick links to the main areas of the site in one of the frames, and the web site in the other.
A hyperlink is a piece of text that, when clicked on, will take the user to another place. The linked text is also called hypertext. Also called a link, a hyperlink can take the user to a different place on the page, or to a different page altogether. A hyperlink can also be in the form of a graphic.
A graphic is any image. It can be a photograph, an icon, a company's logo, a drawing, or a piece of clip-art. Graphics' filenames have extensions such as ".bmp", ".tif", or ".gif". That extension is called the graphic's format. Currently, the only two formats supported by most browsers are: ".gif" and ".jpg".
An image map is a hyperlinked graphic on the Internet. The interesting thing about an image map, however, is that clicking on different locations of the image map takes the user to different places. Image maps add interactivity to a page, but they aren't as widely supported as normal hyperlinks.
CGI Scripts are a great way to add interactivity to a web site. They can serve as interactive quizzes, password protected areas, constantly changing information, user registration, guestbooks, or almost anything else you can imagine. The only drawback to CGI scripts is that they require a special server in order to use them.
Hosting is simply defined as the process of putting your documents on the web for others to see. By having your web pages hosted by PenguinNet, you will be avoiding the costly and time-consuming task of owning your own server.
